There are some soap recipes that just feel like they belong in an old farmhouse kitchen, and this Goat Milk & Triple Butter Bar is certainly one of them. It’s the sort of recipe I imagine Grandma making when she wanted something a little extra special tucked away on the curing shelf.
This is a generous 72-ounce batch of oils, built around plenty of olive oil with coconut and castor oils, then made especially rich with three beautiful butters (shea, cocoa, and mango butter). I added goat milk powder, kaolin clay, and oats, two tablespoons of each. You can use frozen goat milk in place of the water, but this method is nice when you haven’t got any frozen goat milk.
It makes for the kind of old-fashioned soap that looks just as comforting as it feels.
And, of course, I couldn’t leave this one plain.
I divided the batter into three little pitchers. One stayed its natural creamy color, while the other two became shades of warm brown. I alternated those colors as I poured and then reached for my wire tie to give everything a gentle hanger swirl. When the loaf was finally cut, there were ribbons of cream, caramel and deep brown winding through every bar. No two slices looked quite alike, and I think that is half the charm of handmade soap. Every loaf is a new surprise.
For the fragrance, Oatmeal Milk & Honey seemed just right. It suits those warm colors and the rustic oats so beautifully. I used a length of bubble wrap on top with the oats for an old fashioned rustic look.
Sometimes the prettiest batches aren’t the ones we fuss over the most. They’re the ones made from simple ingredients, a few well-loved tools, and an afternoon spent quietly making something with our own two hands.
Grandma would have called this one a keeper.

Cold Process Soap Recipe
This is a wonderfully rich, old-fashioned soap recipe made with 72 ounces of oils and a 5% superfat. Olive oil makes up the heart of the recipe, while shea, cocoa, and mango butters give it that special triple-butter touch.
Oils & Butters — 72 oz total
28.8 oz Olive Oil 40%
14.4 oz Coconut Oil (76°) 20%
7.2 oz Shea Butter 10%
7.2 oz Cocoa Butter 10%
7.2 oz Mango Seed Butter 10%
7.2 oz Castor Oil 10%
Lye & Liquid
26.61 oz Water
9.84 oz Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
5% Superfat
Additives
2 Tbsp Goat Milk Powder
2 Tbsp Kaolin Clay
2 Tbsp Oats

🤎 The Swirl
Divide the finished soap batter into three portions. Leave one portion its natural creamy color. Color the second with a light brown mica and the third with a darker brown mica.
Pour the natural batter into the mold, alternating the two shades of brown throughout the pour. Finish with a hanger swirl to create those warm ribbons of cream, caramel and brown through each bar.
Grandma’s Note: Don’t fuss too much over the swirl. A little unevenness is what gives every cut bar its own personality, those are often the prettiest ones on the curing shelf.
