 Raspberry & Cream Soap

Raspberry & Cream reminded me of late summer afternoons in Grandma’s kitchen, when the berry bushes were heavy and somebody was always coming through the back screen door with a little bucket of raspberries and red lips... Some were destined for jam, some for a pie, and more than a few disappeared before they ever made it to the kitchen. Grandma liked to serve some with fresh sweet cream. There was something so simple, yet delicious about that combination. Nothing fancy, just simple ripe berries, and the sort of sweetness that made you linger at the table a little longer.

That was the feeling I wanted to tuck into this batch.

I poured the soap in soft shades of raspberry pink and light cream, then gently worked the colors together until little wisps and curls began to appear. I didn’t get a perfect pattern. Grandma never worried much about perfection. She’d say, sometimes the combination of pink and white in soap gives a sort of (bacon) look. And now I understand what she meant. I still think it turned out pretty, but next time, I’ll let the batter thicken up a bit and go for a darker pink.

Across the top went those gentle swirls, a sprinkling of berry-colored bio-degradable glitter, and little raspberries, made from melt-and-pour soap, nestled along the loaf. By the time I finished, it looked less like a batch of soap and more like an old-fashioned raspberry dessert waiting on a farmhouse table.

Now Raspberry & Cream is resting on the curing shelf, where time will do the last bit of work. I’ll try not to hurry it.

After all, Grandma always said that some of the best things are worth waiting for.

🍓 Raspberry & Cream Cold Process Soap

This is a lovely creamy soap recipe with a 72 oz oil batch and a 5% superfat. The combination of olive, coconut, palm, avocado, and castor oils gives the bar a nice balance of hardness, conditioning, creaminess, and bubbles.

Grandma’s Recipe

Oils

  • 28.8 oz Olive Oil 40%

  • 18 oz Coconut Oil, 76° 25%

  • 18 oz Palm Oil 25%

  • 3.6 oz Avocado Oil 5%

  • 3.6 oz Castor Oil 5%

Lye Solution

  • 27.47 oz total liquid divided (Water 22.47oz/ Coconut Cream 5oz)Keep the coconut cream separate and add it to the cooled oils

  • 10.16 oz Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)

  • 5% Superfat

I replaced 5 oz of the water with coconut cream. Add the coconut cream to the cooled oils, rather than mixing it directly with the lye.

Additives

  • 2 Tbsp Kaolin Clay

  • 2 Tbsp Oats

  • Titanium Dioxide, dispersed, for the creamy portion (1Tbsp T.D. with 2Tbsp Water)

  • Pink mica or rose clay for the raspberry-colored portion

  • Raspberry embeds, prepared ahead of time with melt-and-pour soap and pink mica

Fragrance

  • 4.5 oz fragrance

  • Raspberry or a soft floral fragrance is suggested.

🍓Method Creating the Raspberry & Cream Swirl

Prepare your lye solution and allow it to cool. Melt and combine the oils, then add the reserved 5 oz coconut cream to the cooled oils. Add the kaolin clay and oats.

Bring the soap batter to a light trace and separate a portion for the raspberry and pink color. Add dispersed titanium dioxide to the creamy base portion. Pour the pink and cream batters into the mold in alternating layers or passes.

For that pretty, soft swirl running through the finished bars, use your hanger-style swirling tool, I use a wire tie, and make gentle movements through the batter. Finish the top with your prepared raspberry embeds and any decorative touches you’d like.

Grandma’s Note:

Don’t fuss too much over making every swirl match. Raspberry and cream ought to look soft, sweet, and a little bit homemade.

As always, run the formula through your own soap/lye calculator before making it, especially if changing any oils, and follow full lye-safety practices.🍓🤍

🍓 Raspberry & Cream Soap Quick FAQ

🤍Is this a cold process soap recipe?

Yes. This is a cold process recipe made with olive, coconut, palm, avocado, and castor oils, with a 5% superfat.

🤍What makes this soap extra creamy?

The recipe replaces 5 oz of the water with coconut cream, which is added directly to the cooled oils.

🤍What additives are used?

I use 2 tablespoons kaolin clay and 2 tablespoons oats.

🤍How do you create the pink-and-cream design?

Separate some batter for the pink portion and add dispersed titanium dioxide to the creamy base. Alternate the colors as you pour, then use a hanger-style swirling tool to create the design. These colors can be tricky, pink and white sometimes ends up looking like bacon soap. Next time I will use a darker pink and let the batter thicken a bit longer.

🤍What are the little raspberries on top?

They’re soap embeds made ahead of time with melt-and-pour soap and pink mica, not fresh raspberries, by using a raspberry silicone mold.

🤍What fragrance works well with this recipe?

The recipe suggests a raspberry or floral fragrance.

Grandma’s Tip 🤍

Have your colors, fragrance, embeds, and swirling tool ready before you begin. Once that soap batter starts moving, it doesn’t much care whether you’re ready or not!
